SAVE FOR WHAT’S NEXT

College savings calculator

Estimate future education costs and the monthly savings needed for the share you want to cover.

Your numbers

Start with the example, then make it yours. Amounts are in US dollars.

Include the tuition, housing, food and other education costs you want to cover.
An adjustable example assumption, not a forecast.
The remainder could come from aid, earnings or other sources.
Deposited at the end of each month.
Annual effective growth, before taxes and fees. An illustration, not a forecast.

How this estimate works

Inflates each year of college separately, then adds your chosen share of those costs into a savings target at the start of college. Existing savings grow at your annual effective growth assumption, converted to a monthly rate. New contributions arrive at month end. The monthly target assumes no further growth or contributions during college; the entire goal is funded when college begins.

Does not estimate financial aid, scholarships, 529 tax benefits, investment fees or contribution restrictions. Enter the net costs you intend to fund, and use a growth assumption appropriate for the time remaining.

A little more clarity

Should I enter tuition only?

Include the expenses you want this fund to cover. Tuition alone leaves out housing, food, books and other costs.

Does this assume a 529 plan?

No. It is a general savings estimate. It does not calculate account-specific taxes, tax deductions or qualified withdrawal rules.
